It’s Not Tequila! Interesting Facts About Mezcal.

If you have ever been at a bar or Mexican restaurant and heard people talking about Mezcal, you may be wondering what this unique type of spirit is. While many people assume that Mezcal and Tequila are the same thing, they are actually quite different. Mezcal is still a distilled spirit made of Agave, but instead of being made of just one type of Agave like tequila, which is made of the Blue Agave, Mezcal is made of over 30 types of Agave.

Here are some facts that you should know about Mezcal:

  • All tequilas are types of Mezcal, but not all Mezcal is a tequila. For example, Scotch and Bourbon are types of whiskey. Similarly, Tequila is a type of Mezcal.
  • Tequila and Mezcal are distilled differently. This is why they have such a different taste, despite their similarities. Think of it as comparing a Gin and a Vodka. They may look the same and may even come in some of the same drinks, but they have very different flavors.
  • The best way to describe Mezcal’s flavor is “smoky.” If you prefer more of the woody, charcoal-like smoky flavor in your drinks, Mezcal is the spirit for you.
  • While you can use Mezcal in your cocktails and drink it on it’s own, because of its unique flavor and rarity, most people won’t just order Mezcal with a soda or mixer, as they think it is a waste of this unique spirit. But hey, we think you can enjoy Mezcal any way you like at Borracha!
